Charles P. Peace, Jr.

April 15, 1928 — November 14, 2019

Charles Poindexter Peace, Jr., 91, passed away at his home on November 14, 2019. He was born on April 15, 1928, to Charles P. Peace, Sr. and Audra Peace Deal, in Anniston, Alabama. The family moved to Atlanta, Georgia where Charles grew up with his seven sisters, Fannie, Audra, Eva, Alma, Vera, Catherine, Mildred, and his brother, Joseph. The middle of nine, he was affectionately known as Charlie to many. At age 16 he met the love of his life, Mary Frances Smith (Penchy). They were married on May 25, 1946, at the ages of 16 and 18. The walked through married life together for 73 years, deeply in love, and always holding hands. Charlie’s livelihood was the trucking business, working for the likes of Brown, Ryder, and Bowman. He started from the trucking docks, then moved to sales, and on into management, managing terminals in Athens, GA, Raleigh, NC, and Greensboro, NC. One was his favorite sayings was, “If you’ve got it, a truck brought it,” often adding “unless you got it from a stork or Santa Claus.” Charlie loved a good joke, and had an infectious laugh. His laughter brought so much joy to those who were blessed enough to hear it. He loved wood working and creating clever gadgets in his workshop. His absolute favorite things in life were his Penchy and his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, six of his sisters, and his brother. He was also preceded in death by the love of his life, Penchy, who passed away just 3 weeks and two days prior to his death. Although he tried his best to live without her, their love could not keep him separated from her for too long. Their love story is one for the history books. He is survived by and deeply missed by his daughter, Marshae Smith; and her two sons, Stephen and Chad; by his daughter, Donna Runowicz and her husband, Dave, and their daughter, India Dover and her husband, Adam, and by their two children, Ava and Cooper; and by the last of her generation, his sister, Catherine Christian.
