Dr. Roy Gerald “Jere” Chambers, age 72 of Cleveland passed away on Saturday, October 13, 2007 at the North Fulton Regional Hospital in Roswell following complications from a bicycle accident. Born in White County, Georgia on January 23, 1935, he was a son of the late Marvin Lanier and Lora Black Chambers. Dr. Chambers was a 1952 graduate of the Nacoochee High School in Sautee, attended North Georgia College & State University in Dahlonega in the mid 50’s and went on to graduate from the Medical College of Georgia in 1960 with a Psychiatry Degree. He also served 2 years in the United States Air Force as a Captain during the Cuban Missile Crisis and upon his exit from service was in private practice in Augusta for over 40 years. Dr. Chambers also worked with the local White County Community Mental Health. He was a member of the Covenant Presbyterian Church in Augusta, attended Nacoochee Presbyterian Church in Sautee, was an active member of the White County Historical Society, and the Antique Car & Truck Clubs. Dr. Chambers was preceded in death by his sisters, Louise Thigpen, Dorothy Struble, Velma McClendon, and a brother, Billy Wayne Chambers. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Melba Catherne Orr Chambers, Cleveland; daughter and son-in-law, Laura Lynn Chambers Brown and Paul Brown, daughter, Julie Candice Chambers DeLoach, all of Cleveland; daughter and son-in-law, Angela Dawn Chambers Banks and Thomas M. Banks, Jr. Evans, GA; grandchildren, Justin Gerald Annis, Augusta, GA; Daniel Harrison Brown, Callie DeLoach, Megan DeLoach, Kyle DeLoach, all of Cleveland; Chelsea Banks, Lindsey Banks, Thomas Banks, III. all of Evans, GA; brother and sister-in-law, Lanier and Barbara Chambers, sister-in-law, Betty Chambers Kastner, brother-in-law, Bill McClendon, all of Cleveland; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 16, 2007 from the Nacoochee Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Jeff Hutcheson will officiate. Interment will follow in the Yonah View Memorial Gardens in Cleveland with the Rev. Bob Prim officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-9 p.m. on Monday.
