Frances Catherine DeMine Johnson 84 passed away Thursday September 30th at Gateway Health and Rehab in Cleveland Georgia after a short illness.
She was born February 3, 1926 in Youngstown, Ohio to Agnes Mary Hajas DeMine and Edward Amos DeMine. Frances moved to Savannah as a young woman and met and married Vernon Roscoe Johnson. Together they cared for her mother and younger brothers in their home and provided a temporary respite to many other relatives in need.
Frances worked as a Union Camp clerk for 34 years and after retiring, moved to Tybee Island where she spent several years greeting tourists with sunshine and information at the Tybee Island Visitors Center. She was an enthusiastic collector of bargains, books, knick-knacks and old movies. In her last years she loved playing Scrabble. By far, her greatest attribute was her unselfish love and limitless ability to care for those she felt needed her, most especially her grandchildren who affectionately called her “Ginga”. Her last years were spent in the loving care of her son John and his wonderful wife Janet.
Frances is survived by 3 children Cathy Jarman and husband Bob, Robbie Johnson and wife Sherry, John Johnson and wife Janet; Grandchildren Alex Jarman and wife Erica, Anna Jarman, Staci Thomas and husband Jeff, Jessica Johnson, Austin Johnson, John Neal Johnson, and Janey Johnson; Great Grandchildren Caleb Thomas, Cara Thomas, Christian Thomas, and Wyatt Jarman.
