Gale D. Abernathy

Gale D. Abernathy, age 75 of Cleveland, passed away Thursday, February 14, 2013 at his residence.

Mr. Abernathy was born October 10, 1937 in Cleveland to the late Charlie Clayton and Lena Bell Ricketts Abernathy. He served in the U.S. Air Force for twenty years, with remote assignments in Vietnam, Thailand, and Taiwan. After retirement from the service, he worked with his brother at Cleveland Diesel as a mechanic, was a school bus driver, and became Transportation Director for the White County School System until his retirement in 2000. Mr. Abernathy was a Gideon, a deacon, and member of Mt. Yonah Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Carol Abernathy, Cleveland; daughters and sons-in-law, Kim and Ricky Barrett, and Sherry and Aubrey Craven, all of Cleveland; son and daughter-in-law, Brad and Cassie Abernathy, Cleveland; grandchildren, Christopher Barrett and fiancé, Courtney Jones, Josh and Leah Barrett, Benjamin Barrett, Emily Barrett, Andrew Craven, Abbey Craven, Bryson Abernathy, Crawford Abernathy, Faith Abernathy, and Josiah Abernathy, all of Cleveland; great-grandchild, Jack Barrett, Cleveland; step-grandchildren, Kelby Craven and Kylee Craven, Cleveland; brother and sister in law, Phil and Peggy Abernathy, Cleveland.

Funeral services are scheduled for 3:00 PM Sunday, February 17, 2013 at the Chapel of Barrett Funeral Home. The Rev. Doug Merck and Dr. John Yarbrough will officiate. Interment will follow in Gateway Memory Park.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 & 6-8 PM Saturday at the funeral home.
