Hazel Allison

February 18, 1942 — July 15, 2021

The following obit is being placed as a courtesy of Barrett Funeral Home for the family of Mrs. Allison. Barrett Funeral Home was not in charge of arrangements. Hazel was loved by many for her kindness and generosity. Among her family and friends, she earned the nickname “Saint Hazel”. She lived the American dream. She grew up in a poor family in a small mountain town in North Georgia. She worked hard raising her 2 girls and working nights. Even without graduating high school, through her work ethic and intelligence she became a Vice President of one of the largest banks in the south. Now known as Bank of America. She married the love of her life, Horace Allison, at the age of 17. Horace had recently returned from Japan and the war in Korea. They had their 2 daughters, Jeannie & Karen, at a young age. Hazel once said that she and Horace were so amazed how lucky they felt having children that seemed like “living dolls” for them to play with. They raised their family in Stone Mountain Georgia. After Hazel and Horace retired, they moved back to her hometown in Cleveland Georgia. Once the girls grew up and married, Karen had a son. Adam Gurley. Adam produced four great grandchildren Hayden, Allison, Riley and Calla. Hazel said she felt lucky once again, she had a whole new family to love. Devastatingly, her eldest daughter Jeannie died of pancreatic cancer in 2008. Yet another deadly cancer. Sadly, Horace died in 2010. Hazel stayed in the home in Cleveland near her family. She also spent much of her time living with and helping Adam, his wife Stacy and the children. In 2014 Hazel was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. She chose to have a double mastectomy. All seemed fine for years. On Thanksgiving of 2018 the cancer returned with a vengeance. Hazel fought hard trying many types of chemotherapy. During Covid she spent much of her time at home alone suffering from the effects of the chemo. Eventually, the cancer won, spreading through her body and finally into her brain. That wonderful, loving, and intelligent brain……… In tribute to Hazel the family is raising funds the Susan G Komen cancer fighting organization to fight this horrible disease - Breast Cancer.
