Joseph Hawkins

Joe Hawkins passed away on July 26, 2025. He was born on October 6, 1947 in Lula, GA to Joseph B. and Willie Ree Hawkins. Joe was a graduate of East Hall High School, Truett-McConnell College and Piedmont College. He met the love of his life, Rita Irvin, while in college. Joe and Rita were married for 51 years before Rita’s recent passing. Joe and Rita had one daughter Courtney Jo, and two granddaughters, Molly Jo and Sadie Rae. Joe mentioned many times throughout his life that he “is always surrounded by beautiful women”. Joe’s early career was teaching and coaching basketball and baseball in Hall and Dawson counties. Later, he owned and operated a bookstore in Cornelia, GA. For a majority of his career, he was a professional photographer, capturing numerous families' special milestones. Joe enjoyed hunting, golfing, and later in life, pickleball. He was an avid reader and appreciated a good western. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph B. and Willie Ree Hawkins, and his wife, Rita Irvin Hawkins. He was survived by his daughter Courtney Thomas, son in law, Sean Thomas, and two granddaughters, Molly Jo and Sadie Rae. Joe’s family appreciates your prayers during this time.
