Mattie Grace Anchors

Mrs. Mattie Grace Holcomb Anchors, age 89 of Cleveland, passed away on Tuesday, August 14, 2007 at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center following a brief illness. Mattie “Grace” Anchors, wife of Jack Lewis Anchors was the mother of 4, grandmother of 10, and the great grandmother of 13. Her children and their children are filled with the character, substance, and beliefs she instilled. She was guided by a love of family, duty, thriftiness, simplicity, economy and responsibility for oneself. She lived and taught all her children the Golden Rule: “do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. Her saving faith was in this simple saying, and guided her as she grew from child to womanhood. She has inspired many lives with her strong faith that is simple yet significant. Born when the United States was entering WWI, Mattie “Grace” Anchors entered this world 1918 in Ila, Georgia, the middle child of Willie Nora and Frank Holcomb. Her father was a hard working farmer and her mother worked at home having and caring for children. Her country living skills grew into a lifelong passion for cooking, canning and left wonderful, long living memories in all her children and grandchildren. Her husband Jack said “she could can anything that popped out of the ground”. Being the middle of 10 children, she had to learn to listen and carefully choose her words that were filled with a thoughtful wisdom. Grace’s careful, quiet thoughtfulness, and wisdom continues to cascade into the lives of her children and grandchildren. . Her impact is and will be everlasting. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jack Lewis Anchors, her sisters: Annie Lou Minnish, Clara Mealor , her brothers: Charles, Curtis and Franklin (Bill) Holcomb. Survivors include her son and daughter in law, Mike and Brenda Anchors, San Antonio, Texas, daughter, Pat Skoog, Daytona Beach, Florida; son and daughter in law, Scott and Kelly Anchors, Old Town, Maine; daughter and son in law, Suzanne and Buddy Belflower, Cleveland; brother, Jack Holcomb, Gainesville; sisters, Betty Helton, Bernice Forziati, both of Cleveland, Eva Todd, Sherman Oaks, CA. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 18, 2007 from the Chapel of Barrett Funeral Home. The Rev. Aubrey McIntyre will officiate. Burial will follow in the Oconee Hills Cemetery in Athens, Georgia. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. on Friday.
