Morris L.J. (Jack) Crawford 1-20-1933 to 9-22-2023, of Braselton, GA Jack Crawford has died. Born Morris Lee Jackson Crawford on January 20, 1933, in Gilmer County, GA, he was the first-born child of Carl Wilson Crawford and Effie Iowa Souther. He was schooled in Pleasant Grove Elementary and in the Ellijay, GA elementary school system. When the family moved, he attended high school at Varnell, GA, and graduated from Dalton High School in 1950. Jack attended Berry College from 1950-1953; served in the U.S. Navy from 1953-1957 and, with the GI Bill, obtained his Bachelor's of Science, Master's of Science, and a doctorate in physiological psychology from the University of Georgia in 1962. He married fellow graduate Carol Ann Barrett in 1960, and they had a son, Michael Jackson Crawford in 1963. Jack continued his post-graduate training in anatomy and electrophysiology at the medical school of Mississippi in Jackson. In 1967 he joined the faculty of the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, conducting behavioral and biochemical research on the NASA timeline for the Apollo moon flight series. In 1969, he joined faculty of the University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and later gained an appointment in the Department of Ophthalmology of the medical school where he remained, retiring in 2004 as holder of the Frederick B. Asche Chair, and Professor of Neuroscience. During his teaching and research career, he authored more than 100 book chapters and research papers on brain function and vision. Jack is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Carol Ann Barrett Crawford, and is survived by his son Michael Jackson Crawford and son-in-law Thomas Hanus Crawford of San Jose, CA; brother John Robert (Bobby) Crawford and his wife Sue Williamson Crawford of Dalton, GA; sister Sara Frances and Charlie Powell of Social Circle, GA; sister Mary Alice Wynn of Valdosta, GA; and by many nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and nephews. Final arrangements will be by Barrett Funeral Home of Cleveland, GA; the body cremated, with ashes interred in the columbarium.
