William “Bill” Louis Fernandez, born July 10, 1945, in Ft. Myers, Florida, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on June 3, 2026.
He was the son of Joe George Fernandez and Nona Grace (Hall) Fernandez and is preceded in death by his parents as well as his two brothers, two sisters, and one grandson Josh William.
On March 23, 1968, Bill married the love of his life, Mary Ellen Buchanan. Their love story began when Bill, then a commercial fisherman and a USDA inspector, met Mary at a farm where he was inspecting corn. Mary returned for 3 straight days to buy corn –and his heart. They were married just one month later and shared 58 beautiful years together as best friends who did everything side by side.
Bill and Mary raised two children; Tina Louise Fernandez, and son Joe John Fernandez. Bill and Mary mentored many young children including one by the name Debbie Brown, who they came to love as their own. They were blessed with ten grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.
Bill built a varied and hardworking career while still enjoying his passion for commercial fishing at the same time. He began as a USDA inspector before becoming a successful roofing contractor and business proprietor. He took great pride in his work and the life he provided for his family.
An outdoorsman at heart, Bill loved hunting, fishing, and spending time in the mountains. He cherished every moment with Mary and was happiest with her by his side. He was also a devoted doggie dad, especially to his beloved Sally Belle, who stayed faithfully by his side until the end.
In 2005, Bill was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Against all odds and true to his character, with Mary by his side, he fought with incredible strength and determination, achieving remission in 2012. That victory allowed him and Mary to fulfill their longtime dream of moving to the northeast Georgia mountains, where they built a beautiful log cabin and created countless cherished memories together.
Bill will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, loyal friend, and a man who lived life on his own terms with resilience, kindness, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys – family, nature, and the mountains he came to call home.
He is survived by his beloved wife Mary, his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and many dear friends near and far.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
